For some of us, granola conjures images of earthy-crunchy hippie communes and sweet, DIY breakfast concoctions. In reality, Dr. James Caleb Jackson invented what he called Granula — toasted graham flour and honey formed like large Grape-Nuts — in Dansville, New York, at the Jackson Sanitarium in 1863. Right around the same time, John Harvey Kellogg invented something similar, which he later renamed Granola to avoid legal issues with Dr. Jackson.
